"What to eat...? What to eat...?", the advertising jingle of The Chicken Rice Shop has been stuck inside my head ever since I heard it in the cinema a few months back. The jingle goes on to sing that the Chicken Rice Shop is the choice of what we should eat. Today, my family and I were out of options to eat at One Utama because there was just too much variety and we wanted something not too filling yet affordable. So the Chicken Rice Shop came into mind.
It is what its tagline claims to be, "Chicken Rice...and More!" When one wants to eat chicken rice, they usually go to the one at the local kopitiam where they serve roast chicken (usually the breast portion) on top of steaming hot butter rice. It is accompanied by some cut cucumbers on the side and the rice is drenched with sticky soy sauce.
But what one does not expect from a franchised HALAL chicken rice shop is not only good Halal roast chicken rice but also a whole lot of other dishes in the extensive menu.
This photo on the right only shows a small section of the menu. It was what we ordered because there was four of us.
It says Family Delights (3-4 Pax). The set costs approximately RM60 with added tax. It is affordable because there are a total of 10 items in the set! The portion was reasonable too.
The appetizers were Pai Tee, Gado-Gado while the main dishes were 1/4 Roast Chicken, Curry Chicken, Towfoo with Oyster Sauce, Ipoh Bean Sprouts, Sai To Fish Balls and 4 Bowls of Rice. The funny thing was, we did not receive the Sai To Fish Balls. We were given complimentary soup but it was what it said it was, complimentary soup. Oh, in the menu it says Soup of the day. Well, you get my drift.
Here are the photos of the dishes I mentioned earlier minus the fish balls, rice, soup and pepsi.
From (L-R): Pai Tee, Gado-Gado, Roast Chicken, Curry Chicken, Towfoo, Bean Sprouts
The Pai Tee (or Top Hat) is a very popular Nyonya dish. It is the Chicken Rice Shop's signature appetizer. I love the crunchiness of the Pai Tee and the fresh vegetables when you bite through the Pai Tee. Although there were 4 of us, they provided 6 Pai Tees so my brother and I had two.
Next, it is the Gado-Gado. It is a type of rojak and if I'm not mistaken, it is a popular Malay dish. I didn't really try it because I'm not really a fan of Gado-Gado.
Third in line in the picture is the 1/4 Roast Chicken. It tastes pretty good, alot of meat and not too much bones - just the way I like it. However it is not the best I've tasted.
Beside the 1/4 Roast Chicken is the delicious Curry Chicken. The curry is flavorful and has a few pieces of chicken in it. There are some cut potatoes in it too. I did not eat the chicken as there was not enough. But the curry is a must try.
I always like my beancurds made with egg and since this one does not have eggs, it didn't really interest me but I think the oyster sauce makes a good topping. There are some fried onions and spring onions as condiments on top of the tow foo which saves the dish from becoming too bland.
Last but not least is the Ipoh Bean Sprouts. Truthfully it is not bad at all. I've tasted alot of Bean Sprouts and this one is actually in the top 5 list. A recommendation if you like vegetables but not the green kind.
For more info, visit the website. I think the food is reasonably priced and is fair for the amount we get. The taste is not too bad either, and the service is efficient. A definite place to visit if you want something cheap, local and delicious!
